When done correctly, electrostatic powder coating delivers a surface that can last for decades. But how does the process actually work? Let us walk you through it step by step.
1. Surface Preparation
The quality of powder coating depends heavily on surface preparation. At this stage, rust, grease, dust, and old paint residues are removed from the metal surface.
Degreasing
Chemical solutions or steam are used to remove oils and contaminants from the metal surface. If this step is skipped, the coating will not adhere and will peel off quickly.
Sandblasting or Phosphating
Sandblasting creates a roughened surface that improves paint adhesion. Phosphating is a chemical process that both increases corrosion resistance and improves paint bonding. At Teknosan Boya, we use both methods depending on the part requirements.
2. Electrostatic Coating
Once surface preparation is complete, the coating process begins:
- Powder is electrostatically charged through a spray gun and applied to the metal surface
- The charged powder particles adhere magnetically to the grounded metal
- This minimizes waste — unused powder is collected and reused
3. Curing (Oven Baking)
After coating, the part is placed in an oven at approximately 180–200°C. After 15–20 minutes, the powder melts, flows, and hardens to form a chemical bond with the metal surface.
The resulting surface is extremely resistant to scratching, impact, moisture, and chemicals.
4. Cooling and Quality Control
Parts are cooled in a controlled manner after leaving the oven. Then:
- Color consistency is checked
- Coating thickness is measured
- Scratch and impact tests are performed
- Visual defect inspection is carried out
Key Factors for Quality Results
- Surface preparation is critical: It accounts for 70% of the entire process quality
- Humidity control: Ambient humidity in the coating area affects coating quality
- Correct curing time: Under-curing produces a soft surface; over-curing causes color degradation
